Having to deal with oily skin can be a job all by its self. I have struggled to control my oily skin since my middle school years. I was one of the girls with those little bumps all over the top of my forehead due to all the hairspray I used to keep my bangs up. If you are my age (40 Up), you probably know the bangs hairstyle I refer to. The Kelly Bundy bangs! Some of the girls from my neighborhood used about half a can of Net hairspray a day. Too bad I didn’t know back then half of the beauty tips I have learned as an adult. If you struggle with oily skin, here are 5 Must-Use Tips on prepping your Oily Skin before Applying Makeup. These tips will not only help keep your face clean and clear but will help your makeup to last longer.
1. Wash your face daily with a gentle cleanser.
Applying makeup to your skin’s surface that is not being cleaned correctly will result in having a greasy and unattractive oily shine that can often cause your Makeup to smudge or even fade away as the day goes by. Getting yourself into the routine of doing this every morning will help to remove any of last night’s leftover product residue from your face. Plus, during the night, as you were sleeping, the sebum-an oily secretion of the sebaceous glands (pores)- is building upon the surface of your skin as you sleep. Getting in the habit of cleansing your face with a gentle cleanser will give you a clean surface to work with. Dermatologists recommend a gentle, pH-balanced cleanser for oily skin. Using other types of products that are heavy in chemicals may leave your skin dry and cause your pores to produce more oil.
2. Pat your face gently. Do not rub
Damp towels can contain nasty harbor bacteria that will do nothing but harm your skin and could trigger breakouts. A disposable paper towel decreases the risk of thriving bacteria on your face significantly; they are also softer on your face. You can thank me later! Rubbing your skin too vigorously can cause your skin to become irritated; this strips away the skin’s protective barrier, increasing oil production. Gently patting your face dry will feel nicer because, at the end of the day, we are trying to protect and help our skin, not harm it.
3. Pat a toner on your face
And I mean a toner. You may believe that astringent works better because they shrink enlarged pores. Astringents can cause swelling around the pores, making enlarged pores appear less noticeable, but this is only temporary and irritates the skin. So while you may think you solve one issue, but may cause others unknowingly. Astringents dry out the skin, which stimulates the sebaceous glands causing them to overproduce oil as a defense against over-drying. Patting a gentle toner on your face will remove any remaining residue of your cleanser, dirt, or oil left after washing.
4. Apply a moisturizer with sunscreen
Contrary to beliefs, oily skins need moisturizing too; applying before you apply your Makeup can help even and plump up your skin as part of the preparation. Moisturizers help keep our skin protected from daily aggressors. There is a wide range of moisturizing creams formulated for oily skins that are oil-free. There are various sunscreens for all different skin types, such as oily, blemished, acne-prone skin, and some are suited for use on every skin type and matter you may be facing. Creams that are formulated just for use on oily skin, a little goes a long way. There’s no need to apply a thick layer of moisturizer. Using too much causes your skin to feel greasy looking.
5. Don’t Forget -Makeup primer
If a foundation is part of your daily routine, you want to use a makeup primer. Choose a matte makeup primer that will minimize the appearance of enlarged pores. A primer will keep your makeup from wearing off during the day due to oil production. Even though it may say it is suitable for your skin type, not every makeup primer works for every skin type, “Experimenting with a few different primers first before you find the one that works right for you is your best bet.” Choose primers containing willow bark extract; this helps natural shine control, salicylic acid, which reduces pores’ appearance, and silica helps improve overall skin texture.
Don’t forget to prime your eyelids!
Eyelid primers keep our eye makeup in place while absorbing our natural oil, leading to creasing, smudging, and fading. I hope this is helpful for you; finding the right products and caring for oily skin can be challenging.
